Like Mom Always Used To Say What The Hell Is Wrong With You
If you’re reading this, you’re probably a really helpful person. You want to know how to help someone when they are overwhelmed or disorganized. You probably ask yourself this question all the time:
When you’re sitting with someone who’s struggling or out of control, it’s easy to try to figure out what’s wrong and fix it. We usually try to take the first step by asking
Someone asked, “What’s wrong?” Asking can be even more exhausting at this point because, frankly, they have no idea. And when you start looking for the right answer, it only makes them want to look further – the anxiety gets worse. There is nothing worse than feeling that something is wrong and not knowing what it is.
That’s when things go wrong when you’re not okay. Maybe your heart is beating faster than usual, your mind is racing, and you’re trying to get through the moment.
Pictures That’ll Make You Say,
There are certain phrases and questions to avoid when helping someone. I usually like to avoid commands or questions when someone is really distressed because it’s hard for me to follow or respond. Instead, I focus on how to calm down, sit with the person and go through the waves of emotion with them. You want to focus on joint regulation.
Adults are expected to regulate themselves. We grow up and suddenly become responsible for our thoughts, feelings and actions. This is something we can expect even if we don’t have parents or guardians to teach us how to regulate our emotions. (Warning – you were born without the ability to regulate or control your emotions).
Self-regulation is essential to a full and balanced life. However, this is not the only way to regulate physical and emotional reactions to things. Our ability to regulate or manage our own emotions really depends on how our parents co-regulated with us as children and how secure we feel in our relationships as adults.
Co-regulation means mutual help in coping. “What happened?” When asking a question. We will try to get some information over time so we can fix this. That’s not a bad thing! Unfortunately, when someone is really depressed, it can be very difficult to respond.
Easy Ways To Say
If the nervous system is regulated regularly, it will eventually learn to regulate itself. Co-regulation helps with stress management and enables the development of communication, safety and improved self-regulation skills. The next time you are with someone who is stressed, think about how you can make a safe space for both of you. The goal is to create a space where they can share their experiences, not impose.
This is very personal and varies from person to person. As always, do what’s right for you and them.
**ask for consent before touching anyone and do not touch unless you are sure it is appropriate, permissible or beneficial for that person and this relationship**
Accepting that you don’t need to know the exact details of your pain in order to help you will make things easier. We try to get all the details so we can make the right decision, but often all we need to get started is to be there and be there.

Once the adjustment begins and the person feels safe/calm, you can ask them open-ended questions and help them discuss it. It is also a place where you can be compassionate and supportive.
