The 900-mile road trip from Atlanta to Dallas takes more than 14 hours. Major stops include Nashville, Memphis, Little Rock, Birmingham and Jackson and the Natchez Trace Parkway, Talladega National Forest, Chattanooga and Prentiss Cooper State Forest.

Whether you decide to go north or south from Atlanta, the trip will be around the same time. Our recommended fastest route takes you north through the music cities of Nashville and Memphis and covers 920 miles, taking at least 14 hours by car.

Shorter in mileage, our southern route is slightly shorter at 900 miles and takes you through Jackson and Birmingham instead. However, due to the slower (but more scenic) roads through Natchez, this route will take an additional 30 minutes to complete.

Since both options take over 14 hours of driving time, you may want to stop at least once. Given the many interesting museums, sights and attractions (not to mention the cities) you’ll pass, we recommend spending three to four days to complete it.

Since both routes are similar in length and driving time, the best route depends on your preference.

Our northern route takes you through Nashville and Memphis, two of the most vibrant and exciting cities in the southern United States. If you’re interested in live music, history, and more, you’ll find plenty of dining, sleeping, and entertainment options.

You’ll also enjoy passing through Chattanooga, where you can extend the tour by exploring the stunning and stunning Prentice Cooper State Forest, as well as Little Rock and Texarkana.

If you’re not too worried about missing Nashville and Memphis, our southern route might be the right choice. Instead, you’ll head into the scenic, historic Deep South, avoiding some urban areas where the northern route offers a more relaxed and scenic ride.

The drive along the Natchez Trace Parkway (where recreational and historic riders can stop along the way to enjoy the sights) is especially beautiful. You’ll also pass through many historic sites and national forests, including the Bienville National Forest.

Passing through Talladega National Forest and Chattahoochee-Ocone National Forest as well as Marietta, the interstate heads north from Atlanta to Chattanooga.

Stop in Chattanooga to enjoy a view of this beautiful city, or take a longer trip to Prentiss Cooper State Forest before heading west to Nashville.

Continue west and pass the Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge before continuing your musical journey through Memphis. They still crossed the Mississippi River on the interstate and passed through several national forests and wildlife parks, including the White River National Wildlife Refuge.

When you get to Little Rock, you can go north on Ozark-St. Drive into Francis National Forests or Ouachita National Forest, or continue west into Texas.

Follow the Dallas signs as you pass Mt Pleasant and Sulfur Springs and several beautiful lakes including Lake Fork, Lake Tawakoni and Lake Lavon.

You can relax, fish, boat, and even swim in a protected cave on the shores of Lake Tawakoni in Texas.

Head west on the interstate from Atlanta to Birmingham through the Talladega National Forest, where you can enjoy hiking in one of the oldest national forests in the United States.

After leaving town, continue west and exit the interstate to join US-82 into Mississippi. Pass through Bienville National Forest and Delta National Forest before descending to Jackson.

Join the Interstate South briefly before continuing to Natchez, where you can make stops including the Red River State Wildlife Management Area and the Natchez Trace Parkway.

Continue west past some woods and follow signs to Shreveport to visit the town or drive through and cross the border into Texas.

The final stretch takes you west on the interstate to Dallas, though if you have extra time on your hands, you can cross into the Angelina National Forest before descending into the city.
