Taking photos of these sights is not only fun, but it can remind you that you were there in the first place. If you’re interested in geography, geology or history in general, this can also be a great reference so you can explore the area further once you’re back on terra firma.
This interesting city is Erbil, Iraq. After seeing it from the air, I later learned that it is one of the longest human-occupied territories on Earth.

The photos you’ll see here certainly won’t win any awards for composition, clarity, or brightness. That’s not the point. I took them mainly to show friends and family some views of the world that they probably wouldn’t have seen otherwise. When I fly over these places, I wonder what life is like there, or for some really remote areas, if anyone has actually set foot there.

Being the geek that I am, I enjoy scrolling through Google later to better understand what I’ve been looking at so far. Google Maps has a fun challenge to find the exact location you see from the air. Sometimes it’s cut and dried, other times it takes a lot of effort to get it back.
The great thing about these types of photos is that you don’t need the latest and greatest camera body or lens to get them. Just stick your smartphone or tablet on the window and away you go. It’s that easy.
These terraced mountains in northern Turkey really stood out against the sky, especially with the snow adding to the contrast.
However, it’s difficult to take great flight photos with all the factors stacked against you: changing lighting, shooting through a window, distance to your subject, etc. But if you want to make your photos a little better, here are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind:

1. Try putting your phone directly against glass (or whatever material airplane windows are made of). This can help reduce glare and reflections in your photo.
2. Do your best to prevent scratches on the window. Almost every plane ever made has these on the portal from what I can tell.
3. Test different orientations of your device to get the best frame. Sometimes the up/down or left/right of the camera lens makes a difference in your field of view.
4. You don’t need to rush, but you do need to hurry a little. When you’re traveling at 500 miles per hour or more, things move quickly, so make sure you shoot before your target gets under the wing in your composition.

5. Go ahead and use digital zoom. Normally I’d tell you to get close to the subject, but that’s a bit hard to do when you’re limited to a cylinder flying through the air.
6. If you are on a flight with a map showing your position, take a picture of it as well. It will help a lot if you try to remember where you are during the shooting.
7. Your raw photo will most likely have a blue haze. Most devices have photo software for basic editing. Get ready for some color correction, contrast adjustment and sharpening. Even better if your app has an anti-fog tool.
8. Watch out for interesting atmospheric phenomena or effects. Hopefully, distant lightning is interesting to catch from the sky. If you’re far enough north or south, the aurora is a real photographic treat. Also keep your eyes open for glories (a rainbow-like halo around the shadow of the plane) they can be a real conversation starter on Facebook.

Before the Z-44 Chaivo well and other similar wells were drilled in eastern Russia, the famous Kola Superdeep well held the record for drilling depth.
The Kola Superdeep well, located in western Russia, this time only 10 km from the border with Norway, was rumored to have been shut down in 1992 because it actually reached “hell”. At the most extreme depth, drilling pierced a very hot cavity, and scientists thought they heard the screams of “damned souls”.
