Did you know there are two types of measuring cups? One for dry ingredients like sugar and flour and one for liquids like oil, water or milk.
Dry measuring cups are to be leveled with a butter knife. Liquid measuring cups have a small spout for pouring liquids, so you can’t overfill them. You can see the measurements along the lines on the sides of the cups, as opposed to measuring up to the top of the cups.

How you measure depends on the dry ingredients. Most of the time for items like brown sugar, you’ll pack the sugar tightly into a measuring cup. Regular sugar, rice, oats, pour or scoop into a container until your measuring cup is full.
For the batter, you take a small spoon and scoop the batter into the appropriate measuring cup. Make sure not to overtighten the cup.
If you do, you’ll need too much flour and it can leave your mixture too dry and your recipe won’t turn out right.
To measure your liquid ingredients, take your measuring cup and place it on a flat surface. Pour your liquid slowly while bending down to eye level to see where your liquid measures. Eye level is important to ensure you are measuring at the correct level.
