How Many Yards In 108 Inches – Today I am so excited to talk to you about the 108″ wide back fabrics. Traditional world quilters have known about these extra wide fabrics for some time, but companies are just starting to make wide fabrics for the modern quilter. What this means for you, the modern quilter:
. Unless you want to, of course. My good friend Katy has been pestering companies for the last few years about printing large items with a more modern appeal. And she did! A big thank you to Katy for all her hard work in this area.

Let’s talk about some rumors for a moment, shall we? I’ve seen it in books, I’ve heard people talk about them, and I’ve seen it online that one of the things modern quilters do is have a quilt back. When I asked about printing 108″ wide modern fabric to some companies, they even mentioned that modern quilters like to do one piece in the back. I think this is really out of necessity rather than modern quilters “liking” to cut backs! There were NO fabrics in wide products that modern RIEU quilters use to make a quilt! bong? What else can you do then? One piece! Duh. I’m not going to spend a lot of time and fabric on a beautiful quilt top and then put a Civil War repro to back it up. It doesn’t suit anyone and it’s really not my style. And I want the work I create to reflect myself and my personal style. There are times, like on a nice frayed quilt top, where I think the back of a piece makes a lot of sense and that’s the direction I would go. But what about when I want a cleaner look? I just want a simple simple back sometimes. And sometimes, I really don’t want to spend the whole time doing that. Not only that, but I don’t want to use up my booster stock. There are times when I wish I had something seamless for the look I’m going for.

In a conversation I had with one of my fabric reps about printing wide items, he told me that quilt shop owners don’t buy 108″ wide fabrics because they are too expensive and they believe their customers won’t buy them. So companies think they shouldn’t print them because shopkeepers don’t buy them. They believe that quilters only buy fabric sales by the yard for quilt backs and piece backs. Of course, of course it happens. I will do! But then again, there was nothing I wanted to buy in baggy fabric to put my quilt on. Let’s dispel that rumor now. 108″ fabrics are NOT for me. Let’s do some math!
Brenda (that’s me!) has a queen size quilt top that measures 81″ x 88″. If I were to make a piece (say, just sew some fabric together, no fancy patterns or blocks on the back) using 44″ wide fabric, I would need 5 yards of fabric. Let’s say I find this fabric on sale for $7/yard. I’ll pay $35 for the fabric and have to make two 2.5 yard cuts and sew them long. Not bad, glad I found a fabric on sale. If I chose a 108″ wide liner, I would need 2.5 yards for the back. Robert Kaufman Spot On Wide fabric is $15/yard right now at Pink Castle Fabrics. So this would cost me $37.50 and I wouldn’t have to sew anything! To look! Yes, the price per meter is more. But the price/square footage is less. That makes sense?
Now you’re thinking, “Okay, how much 108″ wide fabric do I need to make my quilt?” No problem. I’ve put together (by “I” I mean Jason made them for me) a series of charts showing how many yards you need for standard size quilts and a cutting guide for each one. I’ve included 4″ on each side for excess and this is the typical size a longarmer will tell you to make the bracket.
For the back size (60″ x 75″) there are 2 ways that make sense based on the 108″ wide fabric. First you need 2 yards of 108″ wide fabric. You will have a 25″ strip left over, which is enough to support 2-4 pillows.
If you orient your fabric the other way and buy 2.5 yards of lining fabric, you’ll have a 40″ wide strip on the extra side and that’s big enough to make 1-2 baby size quilt backs!
The king size will be a little tight and you might want to add fabric in the middle to make it bigger and buy an extra half meter for the length. But if your king size is smaller than mine, it might fit.
We will be looking for modern 108″ wide fabrics and will update the collection as we find them. Click on the logo below to go to our extensive store support section.
The best thing we can do to encourage fabric manufacturing companies to continue making more modern 108″ fabrics is to buy them! Ask your local quilt store to stock the 108″ fabrics you prefer, and ask the manufacturers what type of fabric you would like to see in 108″ wide fabrics.
