The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends a daily sugar intake of 36 grams for men and 25 grams for women. Following these guidelines can be difficult, because sugar is in tons of foods, and added sugar is so easy, it shows up in places you wouldn’t suspect.

The average American consumes 17 teaspoons of added sugar per day. But federal dietary guidelines recommend limiting added sugars to no more than 10% of calories per day—in a 2,000-calorie diet, that’s 12 teaspoons or 200 calories of added sugar, and the AHA’s added sugars are still low.

The good news is that counting added sugar in grams is getting easier, thanks to changes in food labeling requirements. Many products now include added sugar under the total sugar label.
By 2020, companies with revenues over $10 million will be required by law to list all added sugar in grams. And in 2021, low-income companies will be required to comply.
