Did you know that there are two types of tape measure? There’s one for dry ingredients like sugar and flour and one for liquids like oil, water or milk.
The dry scoops are meant to be leveled, for example, with a butter knife. While the liquid cups have a small spout meant for pouring the liquid, so you can’t overfill it. You’ll find the measurements on the side of the cup with the lines, as opposed to measuring up to the top of the scoop.

Depending on the dry ingredient it will depend on how you measure. Many times for items like brown sugar, you’ll be packing the sugar tightly right into the measuring cup. Regular sugar, rice, oats, you pour it until the scoop is full or runs out of the container.
For the flour, take a smaller spoon and pour the flour into the correct measuring cup. Make sure you never pack it tightly in the cup.
If you do this, you’ll get too much flour and it can leave your mixture too dry and your recipe won’t turn out well.
To measure your liquid ingredients, take the measuring cup and place it on a flat surface. Slowly pour the liquid as you lean down at eye level to see where the liquid is measuring. Eye height is important to ensure you measure at the correct level.
