Let’s jump into the first example. In this problem we get two shapes and in this case we have two triangles, we are asked to see which two parts are congruent. Remember that two parts are congruent if they have the same length. Unfortunately, we do not know the length of a part in the photo. But we have ticks; remember that we can visually show that two line segments are congruent with cross marks. In the first part of the triangle AB has a double tick and the part BC has a single tick. In the second triangle section RT one crosses and section ST has three crosses. Match segments with tick marks so that segment BC coincides with segment RT and this is our final solution. Well, that was a good warm-up, let’s try another challenging problem. In this problem we have a rectangle consisting of 4 vertices and 4 line segments, this type of shape is a special type of quadrilateral. Quadrilaterals will be discussed in more detail in a later post. Now we need to determine the length of the segment AB if the perimeter (the distance around the image) is 66 and the line segment DC is twice as long as the line segment CB. We can determine the length of the line segment AB by describing the truth of the problem and the relationship of the geometry of the figure. We need to use algebra to set up the equation and to solve for the unknown length, this time our unknown is the line segment AB. From the figure shown, we know that line segment AD and line segment BC are congruent because these two segments have the same point. In the same way, the line segment DC and the line segment AB are related because these two segments have equal tick marks. Remember that if two line segments are connected, they have the same length or the same width. Now that we have this information, let’s look at the facts of the problem and use algebra to set up the equation. We know that the perimeter is equal to 66, which means that if we add all the lines, the segment must be equal to 66. To solve the equation, we need to find out what we don’t know and assign variables to these unknowns. Since line segment AD and line segment BC are connected, we can use the variable x to represent their length. Similarly, we can use the variable y to represent the length of segment CD and segment AB. Substituting these variables into our perimeter equation and simplifying we get the following. Note that we have two letters in our equation, in its form we cannot solve a change, we have to replace one of the variables or x or y with a statement that simplifies the equation with two variables to give an equation. only one difference. We can do this only by using the second fact of the problem, in this line segment DC is twice as long as line segment CB, we can express this relationship as follows. Now we are not done this is not like your algebra class where the goal was to solve for x, in a geometry problem we have to make sure we have answered the question completely. Note that x represents the length of line segment AD or BC, we were asked to find the length of line segment AB and not the other two segments. So we know from the fact that the segment DC is twice the length of the segment CB because the length of the segment BC is 11, then the length of the segment AB is equal to twice this number in this case 22.
