Apple and Samsung have been fighting a flagship battle for years, trying to match each other in each annual release. With the launch of the new Samsung Galaxy S9, the fan debate about the best phone starts all over again. So what is it: iPhone 8 or Samsung Galaxy S9?
What’s 9 8
Now that we’ve had a chance to review and play with Samsung’s latest flagship, we’re finally able to compare the two and help you decide which expensive powerhouse you should buy. Both the Samsung Galaxy S9 and iPhone 8 are excellent phones, but which one should be in your pocket?
Activities To Build Grit And Resilience In Children
Both the iPhone 8 and the Samsung Galaxy S9 look almost identical to their predecessors, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing as both are some of the best looking you can buy. However, this makes it difficult to judge the competition.
But that comes at a price, and not just one that can be measured in pounds and cents. For starters, both phones are very fragile, with fragile glass fronts and backs. iPhone 8 is available in space grey, silver and gold. The S9, on the other hand, comes in more bold colors: Midnight Black, Lilac Purple, and Coral Blue.
There’s definitely more screen on the S9 bezel compared to the iPhone 8, which looks a bit more stylish, but that means there’s no physical home button on the S9 and the fingerprint scanner is moved to the back.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 is IP68 dust and water resistant and the iPhone 8 is IP67 rated. Both phones are resistant to the elements, but while the iPhone 8 can be submerged for half an hour in a meter of water, the Galaxy S9 can be submerged to a depth of 1.5 meters for the same amount of time. There’s not much to put down as we don’t recommend swimming with either phone anyway.

When it comes to wireless charging, Samsung Galaxy phones have had this feature for years and the Samsung Galaxy S9 is no different. Thankfully, Apple finally introduced this with the iPhone 8, so this is an important step towards equality.
The only thing that might be a deal breaker for some of you is the beloved 3.5mm headphone jack. While Apple seems to have gotten rid of the headphone jack for good on its iPhones, including the iPhone 8, many will be pleased to hear that the Galaxy S9 still has one. The Galaxy S9 is the real opposite here as almost every other Android flagship seems to have killed it already or is in the process of doing so.
The Samsung Galaxy S9’s display is amazing, and it’s one of the best screens on the market, making it hard for the iPhone 8 to really compete.
The S9 has a 5.8-inch Quad-HD AMOLED display (2960 x 1440 resolution) with 567.5 ppi. It is very similar to the Galaxy S8. The only difference is that the bezels on the top and bottom have been slightly reduced, so there’s even more screen space.

The iPhone 8’s display is smaller than the S9’s and unfortunately it’s not OLED like the iPhone X’s. It has a 4.7-inch IPS (1334 x 750) display with 326 ppi, it may not sound as spectacular as the Galaxy S9 but it certainly succeeds hold on. The iPhone 8 is the first iPhone to use Apple’s TrueTone technology (first used in the iPad Pro), meaning colors blend in with their surroundings and look more natural. There are simply so many more adjustable display settings on the S9 – from the color profiles to the sheer screen resolution that pushes it over the edge.
In terms of brightness, with the Galaxy S9 we recorded an impressive maximum auto brightness of 992cd/m2 and a manual peak brightness of 465cd/m2. Whereas with the iPhone 8 we recorded a maximum brightness of 577cd/m2.
This is where the Galaxy S9 really shines. It has a 12-megapixel rear camera with an f/1.5 aperture, making it the brightest camera on any smartphone. The iPhone 8 isn’t too far behind, it also has a 12-megapixel rear camera, but with a slightly narrower f/1.8 aperture instead.
The S9 also has a new aperture adjustment feature. When there is enough light, the camera will automatically switch to f/2.4, giving your photos a more detailed look.
What Is The Pressure On A Swimmer 10 M Below The Surface Of A Lake?
In our tests, the Samsung Galaxy S9 performed flawlessly in all conditions, including low light, but this was not at all due to the aperture as we wrote in our review. In fact, sometimes the S9 produced photos that were too bright, resulting in lower quality photos. The iPhone 8 didn’t suffer from any of these issues, taking photos is still good – just not as amazing as the Galaxy S9 might be in its time.
When it comes to camera features, both the S9 and iPhone 8 have optical image stabilization, but other than that, nothing really sets the iPhone 8 apart like the Galaxy S9’s auto aperture or super slow motion video recording described below. .
The S9’s new super slow motion video recording feature means it can record 720p footage at a crazy 960fps. This allows it to stretch 0.2 seconds of footage to a full six seconds. Both phones can record in 4K though, but the slow-motion video capabilities really blow the iPhone 8 out of the water.
As for the front cameras, the iPhone 8 has a 7-megapixel camera while the Galaxy S9 has an 8-megapixel one. Along with the new phone, Samsung introduced AR Emoji. While this appears to be inspired by the success of Apple’s Animoji, they’re exclusive to the iPhone X, so they’re not part of this comparison. While the AR Emoji themselves are a bit of a hit and miss, at least the S9 has the functionality, while for Apple it’s exclusive to the iPhone X.
Samsung Galaxy S9+ Vs Galaxy Note 8: What’s The Difference?
The battery capacity of the Samsung Galaxy S9 is the same as that of the S8. With a capacity of 3000 mAh, it lasts just over a day, which is a little disappointing. While the iPhone 8’s 1,821mAh battery is much smaller, the phone seems to manage a decent show in it and usually manages to clear the day.
The S9 is much faster than its predecessor thanks to the Exynos 9810 octa-core processor. The chip is built on a 10nm process very similar to Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 845. All this is supported by 4 GB RAM and 64 GB.
The iPhone 8 uses the six-core Apple A11 Bionic processor with the M11 coprocessor and neural engine. It has half the RAM of the S9, but performance tests still give the iPhone 8 a very slight advantage. In real life, 99% of people wouldn’t notice the difference.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 also allows you to expand the standard internal memory of 64 GB, supporting micro-SD cards up to 400 GB. As expected, Apple hasn’t toned down its longstanding opposition to expandable storage, so you’re stuck with either 64 or 256GB of storage, depending on which model you buy.

Both of these phones are overwhelmingly expensive, costing over £700, so the decision between the two shouldn’t be taken lightly.
I think with more bang for your buck, the Samsung Galaxy S9 just tip the scales in a lot of ways. It has a bigger battery that lasts longer, the camera is better, and of course it has our old friend headphone jack.
Don’t get me wrong, the iPhone 8 is a great smartphone, but for my money it just isn’t as good as the Samsung Galaxy S9.
