# What Weighs 2 Oz

What Weighs 2 Oz – A very common question people have about tracking their food is, “Do I weigh my food raw or cooked?”

We always recommend weighing raw ingredients whenever possible, as it will always be the most accurate. When you cook food, there are different cooking methods, sauces, ingredients, etc., which can all affect the final cooked weight.

## What Weighs 2 Oz

This is not to say that weighing your cooked food is inefficient, but let’s find out why weighing raw food is more efficient…

Most bacon packages say “2 pan-fried strips” per serving, which refers to cooked bacon. Otherwise, if not specified, it implies that the food is raw.

If you follow the 3 ounces of cooked meat, you should follow as 4 ounces of raw meat as seen on the nutrition label.

This throws off a lot of people. How can 2 ounces of raw rice have the same calories as 4 ounces of cooked rice?

Sticking with the example of rice, when you cook it, all you do is cook it in water. The rice absorbs the water, causing the serving to double in size.

While the weight of the food is doubled, the volume is still the same. You have the exact same amount of rice!

If you have a 4 ounce serving of cooked rice, it has the exact same calories as 2 ounces of raw rice.

If you’re reading this, you probably want to know how to convert from raw to half weight, or vice versa.

Every food conversion is different, and there are several variables to take into account, so no conversion will be 100% accurate all the time. We will dive into some actual conversions, but remember that there are many factors that can affect the balance:

Although it will vary slightly depending on the type of meat you use, you can guarantee that the cooked meat will lose about 25% of its weight once it is cooked.

I’ve personally tried this a handful of times with chicken breast and can confirm that it’s pretty accurate. If you are looking for cooked versus uncooked chicken, it will almost always cook from 8 ounces of raw chicken to 6 ounces of cooked chicken.

If you are looking for nutrition facts on a package of meat, it will be based on the weight of raw meat.

For ease, we recommend weighing raw meat before cooking to remove all the guesswork. You may add spices, sauces or marinades during the cooking process, which can affect the final weight.

But there are certain cases where you can only weigh your cooked meat, especially if someone else is doing the cooking, and that’s where the conversion comes into play.

If you find yourself with a portion of 8 ounces of cooked chicken, you can divide by 0.75 to find that the nutrition will be equal to about 11 ounces of raw chicken. It may not be exact, but it will be a very close approximation.

Cooked to raw pasta conversion: half weight / 2.25 (example: 8 oz half / 2.25 = about 3.5 oz raw)

We have talked a lot about meat, which loses weight when it is cooked due to a loss of water weight.

When you look at the nutrition label of pasta, you typically see a serving size of 2 oz. That’s 2 ounces of raw pasta.

If you serve 2 ounces of half pasta to yourself, you will be really disappointed to discover that the portion is tiny. Instead, you need to weigh 4.5 ounces of cooked pasta.

Conversion from raw to cooked brown rice: raw weight x 2 (example: 2 oz raw x 2 = 4 oz cooked)

Cooked to raw brown rice conversion: weight half/2 (example: 8 oz half/2 = about 4 oz raw)

### Perfect Postal Scale

Similar to pasta, brown rice will increase in weight when cooked. In general, your rice will double in weight when cooked.

Rice is one of those foods that many people find themselves weighing once it is cooked. For example, if you take Chinese food, you will find yourself with a pint of rice. So, how do you measure a portion? That’s when the conversions come into play!

The size of the serving you choose is up to you, but what you choose to weigh, remember that the raw weight is half of what it weighs.

If you share 6 ounces of cooked brown rice and try to follow the nutrition, it will be the same nutrition as 3 ounces of raw brown rice.

White rice acts a little differently than brown rice, and generally triples in size when cooked.

White rice is always my go-to when I order takeout. If you find yourself with some cooked white rice and want to understand the nutrition, you need to divide the weight by 3.

If you have 6 ounces of cooked white rice, divide by 3 to find that you have the same nutrition as 2 ounces of raw white rice.

If you’re tracking your macros (or just your calories) it can be hard to figure out how to accurately weigh your portions.

My recommendation, if you can help it, is to always weigh your raw food. Eliminates all the guesswork and confusion, and is consistent every time! Remember that labels are always based on raw weight, so it makes your life easier.

Whether it is meat, potatoes, pasta or rice, it is very useful to weigh it before cooking. If you cook 4 oz of rice, you know you’re making two 2 oz servings – so you don’t even bother weighing it at the end.

### How Many Ounces Are In A Pint? (+ Conversion Guide!)

When it comes to meat, I always cut it down to the exact portion size I would like. When it comes to chicken breast, I trim the raw chicken to the 8 oz portion I want. So when it’s cooked, it doesn’t matter what the weight is! We know that it will cook up to 6 ounces, but then we can play with marinades, sauces and spices without any worries.

Meanwhile, I completely understand that sometimes you cannot weigh your food before it is prepared. If you’re ordering takeout or eating a dish that someone else has prepared, you may not have the option to weigh your raw food.

That’s when the conversions come into play! Although they may not be 100% accurate, they will help you get very close.
